Interesting DUI Facts
In 1910, New York became the first state in the nation to adopt a law prohibiting drinking and driving. California was next, passing a similar law in 1911. Both laws stated that no intoxicated person shall drive. Neither contained a set level of intoxication, as the Breathalyzer had not yet been invented. Incidentally, the first drunk driving arrest took place in 1897 in London, when a taxi driver crashed into building. The driver pled guilty, and he was fined 25 shillings (about $138 in current dollars). Quite a difference from the penalties today!
